What 3D prints sell on Etsy, and what Etsy allows.

Etsy's rules for 3D printed items, its fees, and a way to check demand.

Etsy does not publish which 3D printed items sell best, and lists you find online are guesses. What Etsy does publish is its rules: a 3D printed item counts as "made by a seller" only if it is produced from the seller's original design, and Etsy notes that such items are often personalised to the buyer. So the question is not only what sells, but what you are allowed to list.

What Etsy's rules say about 3D printed items

Etsy's Creativity Standards put every item in one of four groups: made, designed, handpicked or sourced by a seller. 3D printed items fall under "made by a seller", as "items produced using computerized tools". Etsy says these must be produced from the seller's original design, and are often personalised or customised to the buyer.

  • A bust printed by the seller on their own 3D printer is one of Etsy's own examples of an allowed item.
  • Listings must use your own photos or video of the finished product.
  • For a personalised or engraved item, the first image must show a finished, customised piece, not "Your Text Here".

Trade press reported that on 10 June 2025 Etsy removed the words that had allowed "templated" designs, which ruled out printing other designers' files for sale even with a commercial licence. Etsy's current text matches that reading.

Generators are not generative AI. Etsy's AI rule covers "creations that were generated using AI tools", with AI image generators as the example, and asks for disclosure. A parametric generator such as Morcano Studio is a different kind of tool: a geometry engine that builds a shape from the sizes, text and options you choose, the same way every time, with no machine-learning model. Etsy does not mention parametric tools either way.

Tip.For a listing, what Etsy looks at is the result: your own photos of the finished, personalised piece, an honest description, and a design you made rather than a copy of someone else's model. For a question about your own shop, Etsy support gives a written answer you can keep.

No printer: "designed by a seller"

Etsy's second group, "designed by a seller", covers two things that matter for 3D printing:

  • Your original design, produced by a production partner. You design, a print shop or print farm prints, and you sell. The listing must disclose the production partner and say accurately where the item ships from.
  • Digital downloads of your original content, for example your own 3D model as a file. A bundle or copy of someone else's work does not qualify.

A file exported from a generator usually comes with the generator's licence. Morcano's Terms, for example, allow selling the printed objects (on Seller and Studio) but not the files. See How to sell 3D prints legally for the rules of the model marketplaces.

How to check demand yourself

  1. Search as a buyer

Type what a buyer would type, such as "personalized door sign" or "name keychain", and look at the first pages of results.

  2. Read the reviews, not the counts

Reviews mention what buyers valued, what went wrong and how they used the item. Look for repeated complaints you could solve.

  3. Look for the personalisation field

Many listings for custom items ask for text at checkout. A busy category with many such listings shows that buyers want a version of their own.

  4. Check your own cost

Compare the going price with your cost per piece plus fees. If it does not cover your time, the category is not for you, however busy it looks.

  5. Start with a few listings

Each listing costs $0.20. A handful of well-photographed listings tells you more than a long plan.

What tends to fit both the rules and a home printer

These are categories, not guarantees: personalised items (names, initials, logos supplied by the buyer), items made to measure (a ring size, a stand for a specific bowl, a plate for a specific switch), and small runs for one occasion. They suit a home printer because each piece is different, and they suit the rules when the design is your own.

Morcano Studio has generators for several of these, such as keychains, door signs and rings. Selling the printed pieces needs the Seller or Studio plan. We do not claim that a generated design satisfies Etsy's "original design" rule; see the note above.

Questions

Can I sell 3D printed items on Etsy?

Yes, as "made by a seller" items, if they are produced from your own original design. Etsy notes that such items are often personalised or customised to the buyer.

Can I sell prints of a model I bought a commercial licence for on Etsy?

Etsy's current wording requires your own original design for 3D printed items, and trade press read the June 2025 change as ruling this out. Check Etsy's Creativity Standards and ask Etsy support if unsure.

What are the best-selling 3D prints on Etsy?

Etsy does not publish this. You can judge demand by searching as a buyer, reading reviews, and checking whether listings ask for personalisation.

How much does Etsy take from a sale?

For a US seller, a 6.5% transaction fee and a 3% + $0.25 payment fee, plus a $0.20 listing fee. On a $20 item with no shipping that is about $2.35.

Do personalised items need special photos?

Yes. Etsy requires the first image of a personalised item to show a finished, customised piece rather than a blank or placeholder text.
