How to make money with 3D printing: an honest guide.
Six ways people earn from 3D printing, what they cost, and what to check first.
People earn from 3D printing in six main ways: selling personalised pieces, printing small batches for businesses and events, selling their own designs as files, designing without a printer and using a production partner, printing other people's files as a service, and teaching or repairing. None of them is passive income. What you keep depends on what you sell, to whom, and how much of your time each piece takes. Earnings depend on those three things, so this guide gives the costs and rules that decide them.
The six ways people earn from 3D printing
- Personalised pieces
- Names, initials, logos, sizes: keychains, door signs, rings, stamps, plant pots. The buyer pays for something made for them, which a mass-produced item cannot offer.
- Small batches for businesses and events
- Name tags for a conference, branded coasters for a café, keychains for a team or a school. One design, a list of names, a fixed deadline. See Personalised 3D prints in batches.
- Your own designs as files
- You design a model and sell the file on a model marketplace. This needs design skill and an original idea, and it pays per download. Each marketplace has its own originality and AI rules; files exported from a generator usually come with a licence that does not allow reselling them. See Selling 3D model files.
- No printer: design and use a production partner
- Etsy accepts a seller's original design produced by a production partner, under "designed by a seller", if the listing says who makes it and where it ships from. A print shop or print farm does the printing; you design, sell and handle the customer.
- Printing as a service
- Clients bring a file and you print it: spare parts, prototypes, props. You are responsible for checking that the client may have it printed for money.
- Teaching and repair
- Workshops, setting up printers for others, repairs. It sells your time and knowledge rather than objects.
What a printed piece really costs
Work it out per piece before you set a price. Five lines matter:
| Cost | How to work it out | Example (assumptions, not a quote) |
|---|---|---|
| Material | grams used × (spool price ÷ spool grams) | 20 g × (20 ÷ 1000) = 0.40 |
| Electricity | printer watts ÷ 1000 × hours × price per kWh | 85 W, 2 h, 0.30 per kWh: about 0.05 |
| Failed prints | add a share for prints that go wrong | your own record; start by assuming some will fail |
| Fees | marketplace and payment fees on the sale | see the Etsy table below |
| Your time | design, setup, removal, packing, messages | often the largest line |
Electricity is usually small next to material and time. A plug-in power meter tells you what your own printer draws.
Etsy fees on a $20 sale
| Fee | Rate | On a $20 item, no shipping charged |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 per listing, renewed every 4 months or after each sale | $0.20 |
| Transaction | 6.5% of the item price plus shipping and gift wrap | $1.30 |
| Payment processing (US) | 3% + $0.25 | $0.85 |
| Total before ads | $2.35, about 12% |
Rules to check before your first sale
- The model's licence. A free download is not a licence to sell prints. CC BY-NC and MakerWorld's Standard Digital File License do not allow selling prints without the creator's permission. See How to sell 3D prints legally.
- The marketplace's rules. Etsy accepts 3D printed items as "made by a seller" only when they are produced from the seller's original design. See What 3D prints sell on Etsy.
- Product safety. In the EU the General Product Safety Regulation applies to consumer products sold from 13 December 2024, including online. Toys and anything that touches food have their own rules.
- Tax and registration. Selling regularly usually means registering as a business where you live. The rules differ by country; check with your tax office.
A sensible way to start
Pick one product for one kind of buyer
For example, name keychains for school leavers, or door signs for small hotels. A narrow start is easier to price and to describe.
Make five and time everything
Record grams, print time, failures and your own minutes per piece. That record is your real cost.
Set a price from the cost, then compare
Add fees and your time, then look at what similar items sell for. If the numbers do not work, change the product, not the arithmetic.
Sell to people you can reach
Local shops, clubs, events and people who already know you are often easier first buyers than a large marketplace.
Keep records
Licences for any model you did not design, client approvals for personalised text and logos, and your sales for tax.
Where Morcano fits
Morcano Studio is one tool for the personalised and batch routes. It has generators for keychains, door signs, coasters, switch plates, ink stamps, rings and more: you set sizes in millimetres and get an STL or 3MF that is checked before download. An orders desk tracks client orders on every plan.
Selling the printed pieces needs the Seller or Studio plan, which include the commercial licence. The files themselves cannot be resold. Plans and prices are on the plans page. Other routes, such as designing your own models in CAD, do not need Morcano at all.
Questions
Is 3D printing a profitable business?
It can be. Margins depend on the product, the buyer and how much of your own time each piece takes. Work out your cost per piece before deciding.
How much can I earn with one 3D printer?
It depends on the price per piece and how many pieces you sell. One printer caps how many pieces you can make in a day, so the price per piece matters more than the printer.
Can I sell prints of models I downloaded for free?
Only if the model's licence allows commercial use, or the creator gives you permission. CC BY allows it with credit; CC BY-NC does not.
What are Etsy's fees for a 3D printed item?
A $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and a payment processing fee (US: 3% + $0.25). Offsite Ads add 15% or 12% on sales they bring.
Do I need to register a business to sell 3D prints?
In many countries yes, once you sell regularly. The rules differ by country, so check with your local tax office.
Can I make money from 3D printing without a printer?
Yes, in two ways: design your own models and sell the files where the marketplace allows it, or sell your own designs printed by a production partner. Etsy allows the second under "designed by a seller" if the listing names the production partner.
